Silk Offers Financial Management Training
Business Journal (September 2008)
Award-winning bookkeeper and new Chamber member, Sandra Silk, is expanding her business. She is branching out into training, networking events and meeting room hire.
Sandra, who founded Sandra Silk Bookkeeping & Business Services at her home five years ago, has moved to a unit at Portway Business Centre, Old Sarum. She now employs two staff and has built up a reputation for her bookkeeping, payroll and other business services, such as Sage training, visiting small businesses at their premises if required.
In June she was named Payroll Professional of the Year 2008 at the Business Enterprise Awards in London. Now she is offering an eight-unit course in small business financial management, with the option of gaining an accredited diploma qualification. One unit is delivered each week and each takes a full day, with lunch provided.
Attendees can choose to do one or more units depending on what they want to learn and each unit can be turned into a qualification by successful completion of an additional assignment which will be provided by the International Association of Bookkeepers and assessed by an examiner. Completion of all eight units with assessed assignments will be awarded the IAB Diploma in Small Business Financial Management, which is an accredited qualification.
The topics covered are keeping basic records, VAT, basic payroll, final accounts and their interpretation, the small business and HMRC, costing and pricing the product, managing working capital, and financial planning and control. Sandra's premises have been approved as an accredited training centre for IAB examinations as well as an examination centre.
"I have a meeting room and training facilities, where I will do the training," said Sandra. "They are also available for people to hire. A lot of small business people work from home and do not have somewhere to meet people, so they can hold their meeting here."
At the same time Sandra is beginning a series of Network and Learn evenings, also at her premises. "We do have a lot of networking events around Salisbury, but I want to come away from them having learnt something to help my business," she said, "so I will invite a business speaker each time."
**Sandra held a Share our Celebration evening on September 18 to show people her new premises, introduce her team, celebrate the busines's fifth birthday and announce future plans.**
