Dealing With HMRC for VAT
We prepare and submit VAT returns for many of our clients and are confident with the information we submit. However occasionally HMRC will request further information before releasing a refund.
We will deal directly with HMRC on any VAT enquiry where we have prepared and submitted the VAT returns for the period in question. As we will always be registered as your agent for VAT so we can submit the returns HMRC will contact us if they want to raise an enquiry. We will then deal directly with them, usually by email, providing them with the information they request. Of course we will have advised you first about the enquiry and obtained your approval to proceed.
A VAT enquiry will usually entail sending a copy of the VAT return and then providing copies of the sales and purchase documents the Inspector requests having looked at that VAT return. Recent enquiries have included a questionnaire which we have completed on behalf of our client, sent to them for checking and approval, before sending back to HMRC.
Having VAT Issues?
Other VAT issues we deal with relate to incorrect processing or allocation of payments and penalties being added which aren’t due. It has recently taken a year to have penalties removed from one of our clients’ VAT accounts. The client kept receiving debt collection letters for this penalty despite our numerous phone calls to HMRC who confirmed the penalties and subsequent interest weren’t due. In the end it took a letter from us explaining why the penalties weren’t due for them to be removed. We are nothing if not persistent!
Outsourcing Your Bookkeeping & VAT Returns
By outsourcing your bookkeeping and VAT to us you can be confident that your VAT returns are accurate (because we will ensure we only claim VAT with a valid VAT receipt) and that any HMRC enquiry or issue will be dealt with by us.
