We now use Xero online accounting software on a regular monthly basis for 25% of the clients we work with. We have found business owners want to have access to their accounts and are no longer content with just receiving monthly management reports. Each of our clients has different requirements so we recommend software based on what is important to them and more frequently now this is Xero.
Data is stored “in the cloud” meaning your accounts are available 24/7 from any device with internet access. It has lots of useful features but we think the three best are:
- automated bank feeds meaning no input of bank transactions
- straightforward invoicing
- quick and easy emailing of invoices and statements to customers
We have set up Xero and provided initial training for a number of businesses who run it themselves and just ask us to review it from time to time. Xero also works well for businesses who need to produce invoices while moving from job to job but leave the rest of the accounts to us. Our client is happy because he has control of his invoicing and knows who owes him and how much instantly and we keep the rest of the accounts and the VAT up to date.
Xero is very user friendly and we find that with just a couple of hours of *hands-on* training business owners can find their way around the accounts, use it effectively for their business and know where to find information. A client's accountant can also be invited to access Xero and can therefore review the accounts at any time they or the client wish to discuss business planning.
